Fora

Alice Rende

Fora is Portuguese for 'outside', which you can take quite literally, as this performance originated from a study of homeless people in Rio de Janeiro. Still, Alice Rende begins her act inside, trapped in a small plexiglass box with hardly any room to move.

Despite nods to Houdini, this modern contortionist primarily creates space to color outside the lines of the genre. In this way, Fora becomes not only an impressive display of contortion but also a way to give a voice to those who don’t fit into any box.
